Summer Adventures in Taos
by Louisa Preston

For two summers I spent a week each June in Taos, New Mexico. Standing in a field of blue-green sage, I would watch the vast New Mexico sky blush shades of reds, pinks and purples as the sun disappeared behind the distant mountain range.

Island Images

In Long Island Sound is an island, where my family and relatives flee to escape the Virginia summer’s humid heat. My great uncle built the cottage, which has provided pleasure to generations. The ocean, beach, nature trails and golf course offer an escape from daily worries.

I’ve traveled all over the world; but, each time on my return home while crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin, I am touched by the realization that I live in the best place in the world. The lights of the city and bridges. The ever changing fog bank, the towering redwoods, the golden hills, the furious Pacific. The National and State Parks are my backyard for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Everyone loves San Francisco with muted water views, sourdough bread and picturesque neighborhoods.

I am grateful to have experienced places all around our planet. Beautiful scenery and friendly people. My travels having involved leading tours on the Inca Trail in Peru. Magazine assignments have taken me to the Pacific, Middle East and Central and South America. For a week I enjoyed scuba diving off the Oceanus live aboard. A one day tour gave a glimpse of Cuban life.

Oceans attract me. However, not until I was certified for scuba diving in '81 did I fully begin to experience the mystical underwater view point.
Growing up on a farm, I'm comfortable around animals. As a child my best friends were my dog and my pony.

I joined my friends and their horses in Yosemite National Park.

This riding vacation had been planned during our summer rides together. For five glorious days we were able to escape from the horror of September 11th.
